The Golden Fleece and the Heroes Who Lived Before Achilles

The most dangerous voyage ever undertaken, told in language that still sings a century later. Padraic Colum gathered the scattered myths of ancient Greece and wove them into a single, unforgettable adventure. At its heart is Jason, a prince raised in shadow by the wise centaur Chiron, who must claim his birthright by crossing the unknown sea to retrieve the Golden Fleece. He gathers around him the greatest heroes who ever lived: Hercules, Orpheus, the twins Castor and Pollux, and more. Their ship, the Argo, becomes a world unto itself, and along the way, Orpheus tells tales that illuminate the cosmos itself, the creation of heaven and earth, Prometheus's defiance, Persephone's descent into darkness. These are stories about what it means to be mortal in a world where gods meddle and heroes must act anyway. Colum writes with the cadence of oral tradition, making the mythic feel immediate. The book endures because it captures something eternal: the hunger to sail into the unknown with companions you trust, to face the impossible. For readers who love adventure and want the myths told as they were meant to be heard.
