The Girl from His Town

This early 20th-century comedy of manners follows Dan Blair, a golden-haired Montana heir who arrives in English high society with more charm than decorum. Fresh from inheriting his father's fortune, Dan navigates aristocratic dinner parties and country shoots with disarming candor, his "unconscionable slang" both confuses and bewitches the Duchess of Breakwater, who declares his "new gayness" utterly irresistible. But back in Montana, singer Letty Lane waits, the girl from his town whose simpler world represents everything he's left behind. As Dan flirts with English nobility and wrestles his sentimental past, Van Vorst asks whether wealth changes a man or merely reveals what was always there. The novel crackles with sharp social comedy: English aristocrats who cannot stand American men yet cannot resist this particular one.
