The Garies and Their Friends

Frank J. Webb

1857

American Literature, Novels

In 1857, Frank J. Webb quietly assembled one of the first novels ever written by an African American. The result is a remarkably sophisticated portrait of Black life in the free North that refuses to let readers look away. The Garie family lives in comfortable Philadelphia, their home a gathering place for educated, prosperous free Black families. Yet even here, in this seemingly protected world, the stain of American racism intrudes through slights, exclusions, and the ever-present knowledge that dignity must be constantly defended. Among the guests at their table is Mr. Winston, formerly enslaved, whose hard-won freedom and hard-won wisdom lend weight to conversations about identity, heritage, and the peculiar burdens of being Black in America. Harriet Beecher Stowe, herself no stranger to literary influence, wrote the preface. What emerges is not protest fiction but something more radical: a sustained assertion that Black families love, argue, aspire, and belong. It endures because it was written from inside a world most Americans never knew existed, with a clarity that still surprises.
