The Funny Philosophers, or Wags and Sweethearts. a Novel

What happens when young professionals with too much time and too many opinions gather at a summer resort? George Yellott's 1872 novel answers with manic energy and sharp wit. The story follows Toney Belton and Tom Seddon, two friends who debate whether gravity exists while observing the romantic disasters unfolding around them at Bella Vista. Their philosophical sparring provides comic counterpoint to genuine romantic chaos: the unfortunate Clarence Hastings pursuing the elusive Claribel Carrington, eccentric locals like Captain Bragg and Ned Botts causing predictable mayhem, and a duel brewing over an absurd monkey incident. Yellott captures a specific Gilded Age tension between earnest philosophical inquiry and the lighter pleasures of courtship and social performance. The novel works as both period comedy and gentle satire of intellectuals who take themselves perhaps too seriously. For readers who enjoy Victorian humor in the tradition of Jerome K. Jerome, this offers a window into forgotten comic voices and the particular anxieties of America's post-Civil War era.
