The Fortunes of Glencore
1857
Glencore Castle perches on its lonely Irish hill, and within its walls Lord Glencore wastes away, a man more rumor than reality. The villagers whisper that his family's fortune was built on dark secrets, that his isolation conceals shame, that the melancholy nobleman is either saint or scoundrel. Into this world of gossip and decay rides Billy Traynor, a pedlar, poet, and unorthodox physician whose rough wit and questionable medicines soon become the talk of the countryside. What follows is a quietly devastating portrait of a man confronting inherited sin, the cruelty of reputation, and the faint possibility of redemption. Lever constructs his novel like a fever dream: part social satire, part Gothic tragedy, entirely unafraid to expose the rot beneath aristocratic surfaces. This is the author better known for comedy turning his gaze toward darkness, producing something atmospheric, unsettling, and surprisingly moving.
