The Forbidden Trail

Honoré Morrow

American Literature, Novels

Roger Moore is seven years old when we first meet him, a boy whose imagination burns as hot as his temper. In the sun-drenched streets of his neighborhood, he builds a makeshift teeter-totter that collapses into playful disaster, winning the wary respect of his friends and the worried attention of his mother, who sees both his brilliance and his fragility. This is a boy who feels everything too fiercely, dreams too wildly, and cannot understand why the world demands he shrink to fit it. As Roger matures from spirited child into young man, he faces the crushing weight of his father's industrial ambitions and the cold machinery of labor that threatens to flatten his creative soul. The novel traces his painful, necessary struggle to reconcile the passionate boy he was with the man he must become, set against the sweeping backdrop of early twentieth-century industry and the dreams of a nation remaking itself. Morrow writes with raw empathy about the cost of growing up, the violence of abandoning one's imagination, and whether any part of a child's wild heart can survive the passage into adulthood.
