The Fog: A Novel

Set in a small Vermont schoolyard at the turn of the twentieth century, The Fog captures the awkwardness and longing of childhood with period-specific detail. The unnamed protagonist, navigating a new school year, encounters Nathan Forge, a new boy marked by freckles and an outsider's uncertainty. What begins as playful banter and competitive comparison reveals the deeper currents of friendship and familial circumstance that shape growing up in rural America. The boys measure themselves against each other, drawing pride and embarrassment from their family backgrounds, their exchanges laced with the bravado and vulnerability that define early adolescence. Pelley writes with genuine affection for the rhythms of small-town life, capturing how childhood friendships form through small challenges and shared discoveries. The novel functions as a quiet portrait of innocence navigating the complexities of social status and family expectation, though its impact feels decidedly of its era rather than timeless.
