The Fine Lady's Airs (1709)
London, 1709. The war is won, the soldiers have returned, and the city's wealthiest heiress has no intention of settling down. Lady Rodomont commands both a fortune and a fearsome wit, and she has made a public sport of refusing every suitor who comes crawling with proposals. But as the play opens, the gentlemen of the town are circling like moths to flame: the cynical Major Bramble, just back from the front with anti-establishment rage; the insufferable Sir Harry, attended by a valet who watches his master make a fool of himself; and Mr. Nicknack, a merchant class climber with money but no manners. Thomas Baker's comedy crackles with the verbal sparring and social climbing that defined early eighteenth-century London. The real joke isn't just who Lady Rodomont will choose, but whether any of these men deserve to be chosen at all. It's a sharp, glittering portrait of a world where love is a transaction, wit is warfare, and marriage is the prize everyone thinks they deserve but few have actually earned.
