The English Rogue: Continued in the Life of Meriton Latroon, and Other Extravagants: The Second Part

In 1665, a book so scandalous it was banned and sold only in alehouses became the talk of England. The English Rogue follows Meriton Latroon, a charmingly unrepentant trickster expelled from England, who chronicles his adventures in the East Indies with brutal honesty and dark humor. Through a series of wild schemes, dodgy trades, anddubious dealings with merchants, women, and colonial administrators, Latroon becomes an unlikely chronicler of greed, hypocrisy, and moral corruption in a world without consequences. What makes Head's novel endure is its daring premise: a protagonist who refuses to apologize for his roguery, who treats the moralizing of society as just another con to be exploited. The book reads like a confession and an indictment at once, using satire and adventure to expose the dishonesty lurking beneath proper English commerce. This is picaresque fiction at its rawest: proto-criminal lit that understands the real crime is getting caught. It influenced everything from Defoe to modern con-artist narratives, yet remains gloriously undignified, a book that scandalized its era and still manages to feel transgressive.
