The Daffodil Fields

A dying man's final season becomes a meditation on what we owe those we leave behind. Nicholas Gray, ruined but not broken, lies in his rural cottage as spring explodes across the daffodil fields outside his window, and with his friends Occleve and Keir at his bedside, he turns his thoughts to the son he must soon abandon to the world. The novel unfolds in quiet, aching conversations about children, about futures, about the complicated love between fathers and sons who must make their own way. The daffodils bloom with brutal beauty, a yearly resurrection that mocks human fragility, and the friends find themselves discussing young Michael and Mary, the daughter Occleve loves, as if naming the next chapter might somehow give them power over the ending. This is not a novel of dramatic events but of interior landscapes, of men confronting their failures and hoping anyway. The early 20th-century pastoral tradition reaches toward something universal: the terror and tenderness of watching the generations succeed us.
