The Complete Poems of Sir John Davies. Volume 1 of 2.

Sir John Davies was a lawyer by trade and a philosopher by temperament, and this volume reveals what happens when rigorous logic meets lyrical ambition. The collection centers on "Nosce Teipsum" ("Know Thyself"), a sequence of poems that interrogates the soul's nature and immortality with the precision of a courtroom argument and the beauty of cathedral music. Davies operates in that fertile space where Renaissance humanism meets emerging scientific thought, celebrating the natural world in odes of genuine wonder while grappling with questions that would preoccupy thinkers for centuries. The intellectual vigor never overwhelms the verse; rather, it gives the poetry its distinctive tension and durability. This volume also includes hymns, odes, and occasional verse that display a lighter touch, proving Davies commanded every register. For readers seeking early English poetry that rewards serious engagement, this volume presents a poet who refused to choose between beauty and brains.
