The Captain of the Polestar, and Other Tales
The Captain of the Polestar, and Other Tales
Before Sherlock Holmes made Arthur Conan Doyle the most famous writer in the English language, he was already exploring darker territories. This early collection showcases Doyle's fascination with the supernatural, the psychological, and the uncanny. The title story follows a medical student aboard a whaling ship trapped in the Arctic ice, where the enigmatic Captain Craigie becomes increasingly fixated on a mysterious vision in the frozen wilderness. As supplies dwindle and the crew's nerves fray, the line between supernatural terror and psychological unraveling blurs into something genuinely unsettling. Other tales venture into haunted country houses, spectral presences, and the kind of quiet dread that seeps into bone. What emerges is a writer already mastering suspense and atmosphere, years before he would reinvent detective fiction. For readers who know Doyle only through Holmes, these stories reveal a more haunted imagination at work, one drawn to vengeance, obsession, and the secrets that haunt the living.
