The Blood of the Conquerors

Ramon Delcasar carries the blood of conquistadors but wears the face of a man America refuses to see. On a train cutting through the Southwest, he watches affluent white women through the sleeper car windows and feels the precise weight of his own invisibility. His family name once meant privilege in Mexico, but in 1920s America, his brown skin is all anyone perceives. Harvey Fergusson writes with sharp compassion about the particular loneliness of belonging fully to neither world. Ramon's ambition to reclaim his family's lost prominence becomes both a personal quest and a broader meditation on identity in a nation that demands you choose: assimilate completely or remain a stranger. His encounters with Julia Roth, a wealthy Anglo woman, offer a glimpse of something like love, but also raise the harder question of whether connection can survive such fundamental asymmetry. The novel endures because it captures an experience that remains urgently relevant: the daily negotiation of identity when the world insists you can only be one thing. A quiet tragedy of manners and belonging.
