The Automaton Ear, and Other Sketches

A music professor named Franz Erckman has spent two decades in isolated devotion to his craft, teaching piano lessons in a quiet village while harboring an increasingly singular ambition: to build a device that can capture and replay the sounds of the past. When he finally constructs his automaton ear, a mechanical apparatus for magnifying acoustic echoes of history, Erckman believes he has achieved something miraculous. But the past, once heard, proves difficult to unhear. This 1876 collection from Florence McLandburgh prefigures the weird fiction tradition by decades, offering a haunting meditation on obsession, memory, and the dangerous seduction of重现 the irretrievable. The titular sketch builds toward an unsettling reckoning with what it means to listen to voices that no longer exist, and whether some silences should remain undisturbed. For readers who savor the strange, lonely corners of Victorian literature.
