The Art of Politicks

In 1729, James Bramston conceived a delicious joke: take Horace's elegant treatise on the art of poetry and apply its formal precision to the grubby business of politics. The result is a satirical poem that pretends to instruct aspiring politicians in their craft while actually exposing the whole absurd enterprise for what it is. Bramston offers mock-serious maxims about gaining power, maintaining influence, and navigating the tensions between Whigs and Tories. He compares contemporary figures to historical names, dissects the theater of parliamentary proceedings, and laments that political ambition has replaced genuine principle. The humor lands because the satire feels recognizable across centuries: the empty rhetoric, the corruption of elections, the gap between public vows and private conduct. Bramston writes with a lightness of touch that keeps the poem from becoming preachy, preferring wit to condemnation. For readers who enjoy the savage political satire of Pope or Swift, or anyone who delights in watching power mocked with intelligence, this poem offers a window into how 18th century Britons saw their political class and found them wanting.
