The Arena, Volume 4, No. 24, November, 1891

This is late Gilded Age America, and something is rotten in the state of commerce. The November 1891 issue of The Arena opens with a scorching indictment of American gambling culture, tracing the thread from backroom lottery tickets to the high-rolling speculation of Wall Street. The author maps the moral wreckage left in capitalism's wake: young men seduced by get-rich-quick dreams, a society that damns the poor man who buys a lottery ticket while celebrating the wealthy man who bets millions on railroad stocks. The critique cuts both ways: the Louisiana Lottery, with its promises of instant wealth to the desperate, and the exchanges of finance, where fortunes rise and fall on rumor and leverage, are revealed as two faces of the same pathological ambition. Beyond the gambling essay, this issue tackles the heated economic debate of the age: protectionism versus free trade, and what it meant for a young nation trying to industrialize while preserving its democratic ideals. For anyone who thinks American anxieties about capitalism and moral decline are modern inventions, this periodical offers a bracing correction.
