The American Prisoner

The American Prisoner is a dark, atmospheric novel set on the windswept moors of Devon, where the landscape itself becomes a force of nature. Phillpotts weaves a tale of ambition, class, and forbidden connection against one of England's most unforgiving terrains. At its center is Maurice Malherb, a younger son of nobility who has staked his future on building Fox Tor Farm into a gentleman's residence, driven by both ambition and resentment. When an American prisoner of war from the Revolutionary War is introduced into this world of stark beauty and harsh judgment, the novel explores what happens when lives intersect across enemy lines. The American prisoner and the Englishwoman at Fox Tor Farm become the emotional core of this story, their connection unfolding against Malherb's mounting frustrations and destructive impulses. Phillpotts examines the boundaries between captivity and freedom, the weight of legacy, and how the moor itself, desolate and ancient, witnesses both human cruelty and unexpected tenderness.
