The Abandoned Farmer

When a doctor prescribes fresh air for their frail son, Henry and Marion Carton abandon their comfortable city life for a rundown farm they know nothing about. She's read all the magazines about the pastoral ideal. He's confident money can solve any problem. Together, they step into a world where chickens won't cooperate, soil refuses to yield, and their romantic notions collide with mud, exhaustion, and neighbors who find their city ways faintly absurd. Preston captures the particular humiliation of watching educated adults fail at tasks a child could manage, the quiet tension between a husband who won't admit defeat and a wife who won't admit she preferred the city, and the fragile hope that perhaps this broken-down land might heal what medicine cannot. The novel sits in that fertile territory between comedy and tragedy, where the absurdity of the Cartons' situation never quite eclipses the genuine tenderness at its core. For readers who delight in stories of outmatched optimists and the humble wisdom that only failure can teach.
