That Boy of Norcott's
1854
The novel opens with a custody trial in Dublin that will determine the fate of young Digby Norcott. His mother seeks to reclaim him from his father, Sir Roger, an extravagant figure of notorious reputation, setting up a clash between two radically different worlds. Digby finds himself torn between paternal luxury and maternal virtue, each demanding loyalty while offering contrasting visions of who he should become. As the court renders its decision and Digby's circumstances shift dramatically, he must navigate the wreckage of his family while forging his own identity. Lever, famed for his Irish tales of humor and adventure, turns here to quieter ground: the intimate devastation of a broken home, the class tensions beneath Victorian respectability, and the quiet resilience required of a child caught between warring parents.
