Stephen Grattan's Faith: A Canadian Story

In a small Canadian town in the late 1860s, John Morely is destroying his family one drink at a time. His wife Alice keeps the household together through sheer will, managing their children while her husband spirals deeper into alcoholism, watching him gamble away wages, return home violent or absent, and drown slowly in drink. Then Stephen Grattan appears: a man who knows this darkness intimately, for he was once the same kind of wreck. Now sober, he becomes the unlikely thread of hope for both John and Alice. Margaret M. Robertson's novel cuts straight to the bone of addiction's devastation in ordinary life, showing how one man's past becomes another's lifeline. Written during the height of the temperance movement, this is a book that feels startlingly contemporary in its emotional honesty, the wreckage of alcoholism, the exhausted patience of those left standing in its wake. It endures because it tells a story that hasn't changed: that recovery is possible, but never easy, and that sometimes the only thing between a family and ruin is one person who refused to give up.
