Spinster of This Parish

Mildred Parker is in love with Alwyn Beckett, a celebrated actor and explorer who happens to be another woman's husband. When her parents forbid the affair and her youthful ardor turns to desperation, Mildred seeks out Miss Verinder, a quiet spinster in their parish whose old-fashioned refinement seems almost quaint against the heat of Mildred's passion. What unfolds is an unlikely friendship between two women divided by generation but united by the complexities of the heart. Maxwell writes with sharp eye for the collision between desire and duty, between the stories young lovers tell themselves and the harder wisdom that comes from watching others stumble. The novel asks what it means to choose passion over propriety, and whether Miss Verinder's solitary peace is truly surrender or the bravest kind of freedom. Part comedy of manners, part quiet meditation on love's costs, this is a forgotten novel about the impossible choices women face when society demands they be either virtuous or happy.
