Short Stories of the New Americainterpreting the America of This Age to High School Boys and Girls

A collection of short stories written in the early 20th century. The book is designed to interpret the social and political landscape of contemporary America, particularly aimed at high school students. Through various narratives, it explores themes related to democracy, service, and the human experience during a period deeply affected by war and societal change. The opening portion begins with a preface explaining the purpose of the anthology, emphasizing the need for literature that resonates with young readers and stirs their feelings toward civic duty. In the first story, ''A Little Kansas Leaven,'' we follow the life of Ellen Boardman, who, after reading about the outbreak of World War I, becomes increasingly troubled by America’s lack of engagement. Her journey from a reserved office worker to a dedicated volunteer in France showcases her evolution as she grapples with the morality of war and her desire to contribute. This opening segment effectively sets the stage for a collection that aims to inspire and inform young Americans about their roles in a changing society.
