Selections from Five English Poets

Five poets, five visions of what it means to be human. This carefully assembled 1901 anthology gathers some of the finest verses in the English language, from Dryden's ornate celebrations of music and saints to Burns's passionate Scottish heart, from Gray's haunting meditation on death in a country churchyard to Coleridge's dreamy explorations of the supernatural. Goldsmith contributes his graceful wit and observation. Together, they span a century of poetic achievement, capturing moments of love and loss, national pride and personal longing, the beauty of the natural world and the weight of mortality. The collection opens with a quiet insistence: that poetry is meant to be heard, that the true test of verse lies in speaking it aloud. It invites readers to slow down, to taste the language, to let these old poems work their quiet magic. Whether you come for the famous Elegy, for the haunting Rime of the Ancient Mariner, or simply for the pleasure of hearing great poets speak, this anthology offers a doorway into some of the most moving verses ever written in English. It endures because it was never meant as a textbook. It was meant as an invitation.
