Sarah's First Start in Life

This is a quiet novel of emergence. Sarah Brown, barely more than a girl, gives up her Christmas to become a kitchen maid in a stranger's house. The year is 1902, and for a working-class young woman, "first start in life" means exactly this: service, discipline, and the slow shaping of self through labor. Adelaide M. G. Campbell writes with tender precision about the particular loneliness of a girl far from home, the rigid hierarchies among servants, and the way poverty forces difficult choices. When tragedy strikes and Sarah returns, readers will recognize the deeper struggle: how to hold onto oneself while fulfilling duty to others. The novel closes with marriage, but that's not the point. The point is the woman who walks toward it.
