Rutledge

A young woman departs St. Catharine's boarding school on a dreary November afternoon, leaving behind the familiar world of girlhood for an uncertain future with her mysterious aunt and cousins. As she wrestles with bittersweet memories of school friendships and rivalries, her melancholy deepens when Mr. Arthur Rutledge arrives, his quiet authority and enigmatic presence disrupting her emotional landscape and drawing her into adult complexities she is utterly unprepared to navigate. Harris weaves a compelling narrative about a young woman's precarious transition into adulthood, where survival depends on deciphering hidden family dynamics and the dangerous allure of a man whose intentions remain obscured. The novel captures the vulnerabilities of women in Victorian America, forced to maneuver through domestic terrains where power imbalances rule and a single misstep can alter the course of a life forever. Harris's work endures as an early example of American domestic Gothic fiction, blending atmospheric tension with sharp observations about the limited choices available to young women of the era.
