Roister Doister: Written, Probably Also Represented, Before 1553. Carefully Edited from the Unique Copy, Now at Eton College

The earliest surviving English comedy emerges from the rowdy margins of the Renaissance, a boisterous predecessor to Shakespearean wit. Ralph Roister Doister is a bombastic fool who fancies himself a lover, pursuing the widow Christian Custance with the subtlety of a drunk shouting poetry in a tavern. His schemes are orchestrated alongside the sharp-tongued servant Provide Bongrace and the sardonic Mathew Merygreeke, whose commentary exposes Roister's self-delusions before the audience does. The play skips the elaborate allegories of medieval drama for something messier and more alive: a comedy of errors where vanity collides with reality, and no one emerges untested. Udall wrote it for performance before Queen Mary around 1553, though it languished unpublished until 1566. Only one copy survives, at Eton College. The play matters not for its polish but for its daring: it is the first known English attempt at classical comedy, a genre of insolent fun and social inversion that would flower into something far greater.
