Rip Foster Rides the Gray Planet

Rip Foster just graduated from six years of training, and now he's being thrown into the deep end. A green lieutenant handed command of a crew of nine new officers, called Planeteers, and sent to capture an asteroid made of pure thorium. That's the prize: a chunk of radioactive metal floating in the void, worth more than any resource on Earth. But out there in the black, it's not just the vacuum that'll kill you. The Consolidation of People's Governments is watching, and any mistake could spark an interplanetary war. This is pure 1950s space adventure, the kind of book that made kids dream of the stars before we ever actually reached them. Harold L. Goodwin writes with the punchy confidence of a Boy's Life serial, mixing hard science (thorium power! asteroids as mining targets!) with the social anxieties of the atomic age. The rival faction feels like Cold War paranoia given narrative form. Rip himself is the ultimate wish-fulfillment hero: young enough to seem relatable, but already a lieutenant, already a leader. For readers who want to understand what science fiction looked like before Star Wars, when space still felt like uncharted frontier and a kid could ride a ship to the gray planet and come back a hero.
