Rescue
"The Rescue" (1920) is a novel by Joseph Conrad featuring Captain Tom Lingard, a buccaneer in the Malayan archipelago. This prequel to "An Outcast of the Islands" and "Almayer's Folly" follows Lingard as he attempts to restore a tribal prince and princess to power, but his plans are complicated by a wealthy Englishman whose yacht runs aground in his operational area. The narrative explores themes of colonialism, love, and the clash of cultures, highlighting Lingard's struggle against both external and internal conflicts. The character of Lingard is believed to be inspired by the real-life figure William Lingard, a trader in the region during the mid-nineteenth century.
