Renshaw Fanning's Quest: A Tale of the High Veldt

An Englishman staggered into the remote farm of Renshaw Fanning, half-dead from thirst, only to find the farmer himself delirious with malaria and raving about a treasure hidden in the "Valley of the Eye." When Fanning recovers, the two men venture into the hostile African terrain seeking untold riches. But the real danger isn't the savage animals or the poisoned arrows waiting in the wilderness. It's the question that haunts every step of their journey: if one of them decided to kill the other in that desolate expanse, who would ever know? Drawing on Mitford's own experiences in South Africa, this 1894 novel inverts the adventure genre that H. Rider Haggard made famous. Here, the treasure quest becomes a mirror reflecting the dark underside of the human heart. The landscape dazzles, the dangers thrill, but beneath it all churns a unsettling meditation on what survival strips away from civilized men.
