Punch, or the London Charivari, Volume 156, May 7, 1919.

This May 1919 issue of Punch arrives eight months after the armistice, capturing a Britain trying to laugh again while sorting through the wreckage of the Great War. The satire here carries an edge that pre-war issues rarely possessed: the jokes about postmen and dogs, the witty letters to public figures, the playful swipes at social customs all contain a knowing bitterness. The magazine that had mocked Victorian society for decades now turned its eye toward a nation awkwardly relearning how to be civilian. May Day customs get the treatments only Punch could deliver: gentle mockery of tradition revived too soon, of people desperate to return to normalcy. This isn't the genteel humor of Edwardian England. It's something leaner, sharper, aware that the old certainties died in the trenches. For anyone studying how societies process trauma through humor, or simply wanting to understand the British temper in that peculiar interim between armistice and treaty, this volume documents the attempt at wit in a world that had recently stopped making sense.
