Punch, or the London Charivari, Volume 153, November 14, 1917

This is British humor under siege. The November 14, 1917 issue of Punch arrives in the fourth year of the Great War, when Londoners queue for rations, when the newspapers carry news from Passchendaele, when the entire nation has reorganized itself around a war that seems to have no end. The magazine's artists and writers turn their sharp pens to wartime Britain: the absurdity of food shortages, the pomposity of military bureaucracy, the strange ways people maintain normalcy amid chaos. Here you will find satirical verses about the price of butter, cartoons mocking the government's latest schemes, and gentle ribbing of the home front's small indignities. This is not propaganda but something more valuable: a record of how a nation laughed its way through apocalypse, using wit as a survival mechanism and satire as a mirror. Nearly a century later, the jokes still land, and the view they offer of early twentieth-century British life is indispensable.
