Punch, or the London Charivari, Volume 153, July 18, 1917

A single issue of Punch magazine from July 1917, when Britain was three years into the Great War and the humor had grown darker, sharper, more desperate. This isn't a collection but a time capsule: cartoons skewering wartime bureaucracy, witty sketches about rationing and shortages, sardonic commentary on government policy, and the peculiar absurdity of maintaining normal life amid loss. The British wit of this era is legendary precisely because it had to be - here was a society coping with unimaginable strain through irony, understatement, and the occasional broad joke about the Germans. This issue captures that specific moment when the war had become dull, exhausting, and endlessly strange. For readers interested in primary sources of British culture, or anyone curious what people were reading and laughing at in wartime London nearly a century ago.
