Punch, or the London Charivari, Volume 103, October 1, 1892

Punch was the great oracle of British wit, the magazine that invented the word 'cartoon' as we know it and spent a century making the powerful and pompous squirm with discomfort. This October 1892 issue captures the magazine at its glorious peak: a time when clever men in clubs could make an entire empire laugh at itself. Here you'll find a playful ode to the cricketer Ranjitsinhji, whose celebrity was just then reaching fever pitch, alongside sly jabs at theatrical productions and the absurd social rituals of the respectable classes. Ladies doing hop-picking gets the gentle mockery treatment, because really, what could be more ridiculous than respectable women pretending to be peasants for fun? The prose fizzes with that particular Victorian energy: prim, proper, and absolutely delighted to be improper. This isn't a book you read for plot. You read it to hear 1892 laughing at itself, to see which human follies haven't changed in 130 years, and to marvel at how elegantly the English have always taken the piss out of everything.
