Punch, or the London Charivari, Volume 100, January 3, 1891

Punch had been skewering the pompous and powerful for nearly a century by 1891, and this centenary volume shows no signs of losing its edge. The London institution that gave us the word "cartoon" in its modern sense deploys its legendary wit against the obsessions of late Victorian England: sensational crime, gilded society, the endless theatre of politics. Here you'll find exaggerated advertisements for executions, gleeful dissection of famous trials, and caricatures that make modern tabloids look tame by comparison. This isn't museum-quality satire, safely behind glass. It's venomous, it's funny, and it speaks to a London that loved a good hanging almost as much as it loved mocking the people who organized them. The social critiques cut deep beneath their playful exterior, observations about class, gender, empire, and the absurdities of modern life that still resonate. The illustrations alone are worth the price of admission, depicting public figures as the vain, grasping creatures Punch knew them to be. For readers who savor the sardonic, who want to understand how Victorians saw themselves and each other, or who simply appreciate comedy that refuses to pull its punches, this volume delivers. It captures a moment when satire was both entertainment and institution, and the wit hasn't aged a day.
