Punch, or the London Charivari, Volume 100, February 7, 1891

This is the 100th issue of Punch, the magazine that invented modern British satire. Dated February 7, 1891, it arrives at the height of Victorian England's cultural confidence, ready to skewer the absurdities of daily life with razor wit. The issue features the deliciously cheeky 'Model Husband Contest,' in which two women compete to paint the most idealized portrait of their husbands for a cash prize, exposing the ridiculous expectations placed on men and the weary humor wives deployed to survive them. Beyond this centerpiece, the issue serves up satirical verses, pointed commentary on artistic controversies, and the kind of topical gossip that kept London talking at dinner parties. Reading this issue feels like stumbling into a late-Victorian drawing room where everyone is clever, cattish, and slightly drunk on their own refinement. It endures because Punch captured the precise tone of its era: serious enough to matter, irreverent enough to entertain, and sharp enough to still draw a smile from a reader a century and a half later.
