Punch, or the London Charivari, Volume 1, October 30, 1841

The first issue of what would become Britain's most influential satirical voice. PUNCH arrived in 1841 and immediately established itself as the publication that dared to mock everyone - from the Queen down to the lowliest street performer. This inaugural volume captures the raw, anarchic energy of Victorian London's answer to MAD magazine, if MAD had been written by intellectuals with a taste for blood. Here you'll find the misadventures of Horatio Fitzharding Fitzfunk, a hapless nobody mistaken for the celebrated actor Hannibal Fitzflam, tumbling through legal chaos and comic misunderstandings. Skits expose the theatrical world's absurd pretensions, while sharp essays skewer social climbing and class hypocrisy with the precision of a surgeon's blade. The cartoons punch (sorry) at pomposity in all its forms. This isn't quaint historical curiosity. It's the template every satirist since has worked from. PUNCH invented the art of making powerful people look foolish, and this volume shows exactly where the tradition began.
