Punch, or the London Charivari, Volume 1, December 4, 1841

December 1841: a new voice emerges in London, one that will shape English humor for the next 150 years. Punch arrives as a sharp-witted antidote to Victorian pomposity, skewering the absurdities of society, politics, and daily life with equal relish. This inaugural issue contains the mock official report on a (fictional) fire at the Tower of London, portraits of Londoners both high and low, and witty dialogues that slice through the pretensions of the age. The jokes land hard: whether mocking aristocratic foolishness, exposing the contradictions of reformers, or simply laughing at the peculiarities of urban existence. Reading this first issue feels like stumbling into a Victorian drawing room where everyone is brilliant and no one is safe. It matters because Punch didn't just entertain; it invented a tradition of satire that Orwell, the Goon Show, and Spitting Image would later inherit. For readers who wonder what Victorians found funny about themselves, this is the answer.
