Punch, or the London Charivari, Vol. 147, October 28, 1914

Punch was the defining voice of British wit for over a century, and this October 1914 issue captures a nation caught between amusement and dread. Just three months after Britain declared war on Germany, the editors and contributors were still searching for the right tone: how do you satirize a conflict that might end by Christmas? How do you mock recruitment when boys are marching off to die? This issue contains the answer: with nervous energy, with absurd observations about wartime censorship, with gentle mockery of the Home Guard's improvised weaponry, with cartoons that now read as both hilarious and heartbreaking. The various contributors blend sharp political commentary with lighter sketches about London life during wartime. There's something haunting about reading jokes about censorship in 1914, knowing what the next four years would bring. This isn't just historical curiosity. It's a portrait of a civilization attempting to laugh while standing at the edge of an abyss.
