Punch, or the London Charivari, October 28th 1893

Punch was the sharpest wit in Victorian Britain, the satirical magazine that helped coin the term 'cartoon' and shaped how an empire laughed at itself. This October 1893 issue, edited by Sir Francis Burnand, delivers the trademark blend of verse, dialogue, and illustration that made it essential reading for everyone from clerks to the aristocracy. The landlord and tenant exchange grievances in verse that still resonates: rent rises, repairs deferred, and the ancient war between property and pocket. There are diary entries so absurd they could only be born of genuine observation, music hall sketches that expose the peculiar rituals of social climbing, and jokes that reward the reader willing to trace their literary references. Burnand's Punch never merely mocked; it diagnosed the small irritations and grand hypocrisies of everyday life with a precision that feels almost modern. For readers who want to understand Victorian England not as a museum of manners but as a world of real people grappling with the same frustrations we recognize today, this issue is a portal.
