Project Mastodon

Three men travel fifty thousand years into the past and found a nation. Not as a thought experiment, but as an actual country with borders, a flag, and a desperate plea for diplomatic recognition from the United States government. Wesley Adams, former ambassador Chuck Hudson, and Secretary of State John Cooper establish Mastodonia in a world of mammoths and saber-toothed cats, then spend the rest of the novel trying to get Washington to take them seriously. It's absurd, of course, but Simak's genius is making that absurdity cut deep. These aren't fools chasing a fantasy; they're men who looked at modern politics and decided the only way to matter was to start over from scratch. The comedy lands because it's rooted in genuine longing: for significance, for legacy, for somewhere to belong. Mastodonia is a strange, gentle satire that asks what any of us would build if we could start fresh and who we'd become waiting for permission to exist.
