Port O' Gold: A History-Romance of the San Francisco Argonauts

The California Gold Rush comes alive in this vivid 1922 novel that traces San Francisco's transformation from Spanish colonial outpost to American metropolis. Louis J. Stellman weaves a tale of colliding worlds: old California aristocracy versus fortune-hungry American speculators, ancient Spanish land grants versus the hungry claims of argonauts streaming in by ship and overland. At the center stands Benito Windham, a young man torn between his family's dying Spanish heritage and the brutal new reality of American expansion. Gamblers like Aleck McTurpin prowl the streets, rumors of land grabs swirl through the saloons, and American forces tighten their grip on a region that was Spanish just decades before. This is historical fiction with real stakes: land, power, love, and the death of one California as another is born. For readers who savor richly detailed period pieces that capture the moment when the old world gives way to the new, this novel offers an immersive portrait of a city, and a society, in extraordinary transformation.
