Popular British Ballads, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 1 (of 4)

Published in 1923, 'Popular British Ballads, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 1' is a compilation of traditional and contemporary ballads that reflect the rich oral storytelling tradition of British culture. Edited likely in the late 19th century, this collection includes both classic ballads from England and Scotland as well as works from modern poets, showcasing themes of love, loss, and social issues. The preface by Reginald Brimley Johnson highlights the evolution of ballads from dance accompaniments to a broader genre of narrative and lyrical poetry, making this work significant for understanding England's literary heritage.
