Plowing on Sunday

In the spring of 1913, a storm sweeps across southern Wisconsin, and Sarah Brailsford fears the worst when her husband Stud does not return home. What she finds instead transforms her quiet farming family: Stud arrives with Early Ann Sherman, a young girl whose mysterious past has sparked whispers throughout the county. While the townsfolk gossip and keep their distance, Sarah chooses something rarer: open-hearted kindness. Sterling North draws on his own Wisconsin childhood to paint a tender portrait of rural American life, where neighbors judge, seasons demand everything, and a family's choice to embrace an outsider becomes their truest test. Plowing on Sunday is a quiet, moving novel about what it costs to welcome someone the world suspects, and what is gained when a mother chooses love over safety.
