Plato's American Republic: Done Out of the Original
1926
Plato's American Republic, published in 1926 by Douglas Woodruff, is a satirical philosophical dialogue that critiques modern American society through the lens of Socratic inquiry. Set in 'Athens, 1925,' it features Socrates and his companions discussing themes such as industrialism, Prohibition, and the impact of mass opinion on governance. The work humorously examines America's obsession with progress and numbers while questioning the values that underpin a good life and polity. Notable for its blend of wit and serious critique, it reflects on the legacy of the Civil War and the role of education in shaping public opinion.
