Penny Nichols Finds a Clue

Penny Nichols is fifteen, sharp-eyed, and bored with ordinary summer plans. When her roadster is stripped of its wheels on a quiet country road, she doesn't wait for the police. She starts investigating herself. What begins as a personal mystery quickly deepens: the thefts are part of a larger criminal operation working its way through their peaceful town. Along with her friend Susan, Penny follows a trail of clues that leads to Jerry Barrows, a mysterious boy whose family ties to the gang remain unclear. Her father, Detective Christopher Nichols, is working the case, but it's his daughter who keeps stumbling onto the most dangerous leads. The banter between Penny and her father crackles with warmth and wit, a dynamic that refuses to let her stay on the sidelines. Written by Mildred A. Wirt Benson, the pioneering writer who would go on to create dozens of Nancy Drew adventures, this 1936 novel offers something remarkable: a teenage girl detective who is genuinely brilliant, genuinely brave, and genuinely allowed to matter.
