Our Little English Cousin

A transport to Edwardian England through the eyes of young Edith, who lives on the picturesque banks of the River Thames. The book opens on a golden summer day as Edith prepares for a delightful excursion with her governess and friends, drifting in a small boat past willows and meadows. Through her eyes, we discover the rituals of English summer: lazy picnics by the water, the sacred ceremony of tea time, and the gentle rhythms of family life in a world before modernity changed everything. McManus, an American who studied in London and Paris, wrote this as part of her 'Little Cousin' series designed to introduce children to cultures across the world. This particular volume captures something rarer than anthropology: the tender particularity of a childhood now vanished, where a child's greatest adventure is a boat trip and the greatest treat is scones with clotted cream. For readers who long for gentler stories, for nostalgic adults seeking a return to a slower world, for children ready for a book that moves at the pace of a summer afternoon.
