Our Christmas Party

Set in the mid-Victorian era, Our Christmas Party follows the effervescent Mr. Merry as he orchestrates a Christmas Eve celebration for the young people of his community. What begins as a simple exchange between Mr. Merry and his pragmatic housekeeper Rebecca, who greets the idea with predictable skepticism before embracing the festive spirit, blossoms into an evening of music, laughter, and unexpected warmth. The guests arrive with their distinct personalities: the musically gifted Tom Martin, the spirited Ada, and others whose quirks and charms fill the pages with gentle comedy. Hodder captures the particular magic of anticipation, the rustle of preparation, and the moment when a room fills with light and song. Beyond its surface merriment, the novel reflects Victorian ideals of community and generosity, showing how a single gathering can mend small rifts and remind neighbors of their duty to one another. Hodder writes with the keen eye of a journalist turned storyteller, populating his festive canvas with characters who feel neither saccharine nor staged. The prose moves with Dickensian warmth but its own distinctive voice, one that finds profundity in punch bowls and stringed instruments rather than ghostly apparitions. For readers seeking the literary equivalent of wassail and fireside comfort, this obscure holiday gem offers a window into how Victorians imagined the season's true purpose: not consumption, but connection.
