One Third Off

One Third Off is Irvin S. Cobb at his most vulnerably funny: a man looking back at his slimmer self with genuine bewilderment and forward at his expanding waistline with resigned horror. Cobb was one of early America's most beloved humorists, a columnist and storyteller whose voice could make even the most mundane observation crackle with life. Here, he turns that gift inward, documenting his descent from a lean young man to someone who has to seriously consider losing 'one third off' his considerable girth. What follows is not a diet book but a delightful ramble through the excuses, schemes, and faceplants that define the eternal dieter's journey. Cobb dissects the fad diets of his era with the weary expertise of a man who has tried them all, from bizarre food combinations to grueling exercise regimens that promise the world and deliver nothing but hunger. His observations about societal expectations and the lies we tell ourselves about body image remain strikingly contemporary, despite being written a century ago. This is vintage humor with real heart: Cobb doesn't mock others so much as hold up a mirror to his own ridiculousness, and somehow that makes it all the more universal.
