American Literature, Novels

Claude Wheeler has everything a young man in Nebraska could want: a prosperous family farm, financial security, a wife. Yet he feels more imprisoned than blessed. His father views him as a failure; his mother loves him but cannot comprehend the restlessness that consumes him. His marriage is a hollow arrangement, his wife devoted only to missionary work. In the suffocating ordinariness of rural America circa 1910, Claude is drowning in a way no one around him can see. When America enters the Great War, he volunteers with a desperation that surprises even himself. For the first time, he feels alive. Cather paints a haunting portrait of a man who finds purpose only in catastrophe, and asks what it means that we so often need destruction to feel whole. This is a melancholy, clear-eyed meditation on loneliness, aspiration, and the high cost of meaning in American life.
