One Hundred Books Famous in English Literature: With Facsimiles of the Title-Pages
One Hundred Books Famous in English Literature: With Facsimiles of the Title-Pages
This is a portal into the literary mind of 1902. The Grolier Club's exhibition catalog presents one hundred books that defined English literature in the eyes of early twentieth-century collectors and scholars - Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, the Brontës, Dickens. Each entry includes a facsimile of the original title page, making this both a bibliographic record and a visual document of how books presented themselves to their first readers. What makes this catalog endure is what it reveals about the construction of literary canon: these are the books deemed essential enough to preserve, to collect, to display as the pillars of a cultural heritage. The title page facsimiles are not mere illustrations. They are artifacts of publication history, showing the reader how a work announced itself to the world - the typography, the attribution, the publisher's device. For bibliophiles and historians of the book, this catalog is a foundation document, establishing which works were considered the bedrock of English literature when the modern notion of the literary canon was still being formed.
